Word Jar Directions
- Hot glue gun
- Measuring Tape
- Scissors
- jar or box (I used an old Clorox wipes container)
- Miscellaneous ribbons, material, glitter, decorative paper, and photographs for decorating.
- Fabric Pens or puff paint
- Sharpies or other non smearing markers
- Popsicle sticks
1.) Rinse and dry jar if needed.
2.) Measure height and circumference of Clorox container. Use measurements to cut a piece of fabric or paper based on your individual dimensions. You can use old newspaper to make a pattern if this is easier for you.
3.) Put hot glue along height edge of your fabric/paper and attach to the side of container. Slowly apply glue to fabric along this line till the fabric is completely wrapped around. Go slowly so you don't burn yourself!
4.) Use fabric pen or puff paint to write a label for your Word Jar.
5.) Add ribbons and trims as desired.
6.) To add 'words' to the jar simply use the marker to write words on Popsicle sticks and add to the jar.
Word Jar Games
Word Jeopardy!
2.) Use a Jeopardy template for powerpoint or the website JeopardyLabs to create a Jeopardy board with the definitions.
3.) Put students into teams and compete to see who knows the most words!
Word Sort
2.) Ask students to explain why they grouped words together (example: These are all words that describe positive things. These words are all verbs.)
Synonyms and Antonyms
2.) If the student correctly gives an antonym or a synonym of the word they get a point.
3.) Repeat for next student.
For large classes you can have teams instead of individuals play.
Around the World
Pull a word from the jar and tell the two competing students the definition of a word. Who ever gives the word fastest gets to move on. This continues until a single individual has competed against every other student.
