The first item on the agenda was to make the tutu. I flipped through a few different tutorials to get a sense of how I wanted to build it. In the end I went with a variation of this tutorial. The one major alteration I made was I decided to use a scrap of gold fabric to wrap the elastic in before applying the strips of tulle. I did this for two reasons. First because I knew that no matter how tightly I attached the tulle some of the elastic band would show--especially since I was going with a lazy no sew version instead of doing it more intensely. Loki's color scheme didn't really seem to fit with white so I wanted to make sure anything that showed didn't detract from the overall costume. As I started to attach the tulle it looked like this.
I really was debating what to start on next. Through the power of way overbuying for my first cosplay (Tifa Lockheart of FF7 fame) I had enough pleather to make a simplified tunic. However, I know the most iconic part of Loki's look is that silly horny helmet.
One problem...I've never done any armor making before.
Another problem...I'm trying to do this spending little to no money so I can't buy much to make it.
So of course I jumped right at the challenge!
I started by collecting things that I thought might prove useful in creating a frame to work with. That included an old New Years Eve party hat, cardboard box from a night of therapeutic Amazon shopping, duct tape, masking tape, and sheets of corkboard from...who knows why I had that.
My solution was to use the corkboard to increase the size of the plastic hat.
Like last we I don't want to leave without something fun and educational so I'll pass on two links today. Some fun from Benedict Cumberbatch and then something interesting to tease your brain with from the folks at Extra Credits.
