So I started working. For my first attempt I decided I wouldn't worry about voice crossing (it IS the modern era after all!) so there are some things that Bach would tisk tisk me for. With this one I was primarily concerned with making the chords work.
And as I worked I remembered why I found this type of music so difficult to write.
However, as I was writing I came across the following tutorial by stefaanhimpe on Soundcloud that proved to be immensely helpful. If you are interested in writing canons I highly suggest you check it out here.
With tutorial in hand I went out to finish my first canon.
I think the end result was okay. Not great, but certainly a good starting point. I ended up just using my not so well started canon and applying a few of the tips suggested in the tutorial. I look forward to writing another later in the summer. With my second canon I will be trying to follow the instructions in the tutorial a little closer and hopefully follow some of Bach's rules a little closer. For now at least, I give you a Parody in D! Thus called because I am parodying the famous/infamous Pachelbel canon in D.
Enjoy
